>Master Bathroom Remodel
September 11 - December 20, 2002
Update: January 27-28, 2004
![]() |
This is what the bathroom looked like when we purchased the
house.
Called the bruised bathroom, for its black, blue and purple color scheme. |
September 11, 2002 - End of Day 1.
Everything has been removed. You are looking at what used to be the vanity. |
September 11, 2002 - End of Day 1.
Looking through the door at the shower. Notice the pile of debris. above that used to be the wall heater.

Inside the bathroom looking towards the door. |
September 11, 2002 - End of Day 1.
Looking at the upper part of the shower door. Notice the abandoned electrical box. From the outside of the house, this was the very old meter box. |
September 11, 2002 - End of Day 1.
This is the vanity. It is standing on end and you are looking at the bottom. At the top, notice the particle board has expanded due to water damage.
September 11, 2002 - End of Day 1.
A close up of the water damaged vanity. |
September 12, 2002 -Day 2. Lunch time.
The plumber has started. Notice how the drywall is opened up on the back wall and you can see the sun light from the water heater room. |
September 12, 2002 - Day 2. Lunch time.
The water heater is removed to gain access to the hot and cold water lines. Notice the hard working plumber in the lower left corner. This room will be the termination point for water for this bathroom. This will make it MUCH easier when we get ready to repipe the entire house. |
September 12, 2002 - Day 2.
The new copper pipe to the water heater. |
September 13, 2002 - Day 3.
What a night. You can see in this picture the old galvanized water pipes have been capped off, but the old pipes to the shower broke just below the concrete. Without the tools to fix it, the water remained shut off overnight, meaning a stay a the local motel. |
September 13, 2002 - Day 3. Morning.
The new shower valve is installed. |
September 16, 2002 - Day 4. Morning.
Here is the replacement pipe that broke causing us to be without water Thursday night. |
September 16, 2002 - Day 4. Morning.
This is a ground level shot showing the shower frame NOT touching the ground. Behind the wood you can see the temporary capped cold water line and the previously capped hot water line (covered with duct tape). |
September 17, 2002 - Day 5. Morning.
Yesterday they cut more of the floor and dug down until they hit dirt. |
September 17, 2002 - Day 5. Morning.
Looking down the hole you can see the pipe they were looking for and found another pipe crossing its path. We think this pipe goes outside, but we are not sure. |
September 17, 2002 - Day 5. Lunch Time.
They have started rebuilding the shower frame with new wood. Notice the new shower door way. |
September 17, 2002 - Day 5. Lunch Time.
They patch part of the floor so they could build the shower frame. They still have to finish removing the old galvanized pipe(s) from under the concrete. |
September 17, 2002 - Day 5. Lunch Time.
Reminder to self. There is a vent pipe in the shower wall. |
September 17, 2002 - Day 5. Lunch Time.
New wood used on upper shower door. Taken without flash. |
September 17, 2002 - Day 5. Lunch Time.
Same shot as before, but now with flash. |
September 18, 2002 - Day 6. Morning.
Yesterday the hot mop crew came in and applied tar to build the shower pan. |
September 18, 2002 - Day 6. Morning.
I don't know why I was surprised that the whole house smelled like tar all night. |
September 18, 2002 - Day 6. Morning.
September 18, 2002 - Day 6. Lunch time.
The crew rented a jackhammer and broke up more concrete. |
September 18, 2002 - Day 6. Lunch time.
This exposed more pipes underground. Notice the rusting, galvanized pipes UNDER the house. I don't think it would be very good if one of these pipes were to break. |
September 18, 2002 - Day 6. Lunch time.
I authorized them to finish opening up the floor and remove as much of the galvanized pipes as possible. |
September 19, 2002 - Day 7. Morning.
You can see the tar paper is now installed in the shower. But more importantly, there is a bigger hole in the bathroom. The major discovery is that a 1" main water line come from the front of the house and first tees off to the toilet, then the sink, then to the shower and hot water heater. We were hoping the water line would start with the water heater and then go to the bathroom.
September 19, 2002 - Day 7. Morning.
A better shot of the tar paper and water is now in the shower pan to test for leaks.
September 19, 2002 - Day 7. Morning.
The plan for today is to not touch the main 1" line, but to go from this Tee into a 3/4" line and up to the water heater. On the way up to the water heater, we will tee again and feed the bathroom. |
September 19, 2002 - Day 7. Morning.
This the first tee going to the toilet. To the left is the sink (not displayed). |
September 19, 2002 - Day 7. Morning.

This is the old cold water line going to the shower. Note it is now capped off. |
September 20, 2002 - Day 8. Morning.
The new copper is now installed. You can see an old tee underground is capped off. |
September 20, 2002 - Day 8. Morning.
This is where the toilet is going. The original cold water line is now capped off below the concrete. The new copper is above it. |
September 20, 2002 - Day 8. Morning.

September 20, 2002 - Day 8. Morning.
This is the tap from the old galvanized to copper to feed the water heater and bathroom. The right side goes outside to the faucet. The left side is the feed from the front of the house. |
September 23, 2002 - Day 9. Morning.
On Friday, they filled in the holes and poured concrete. |
September 23, 2002 - Day 9. Morning.
September 23, 2002 - Day 9. Morning.

September 24, 2002 - Day 10. Morning.
As you can see there is still more to do. |
September 25, 2002 - Day 11. Morning.
Not much was done yesterday. The only change that I saw was the soldering of the shower head receptacle. |
September 25, 2002 - Day 11. Morning.
They still need to move the light's electrical box over to make room for the new lights. The new location is marked with penciled square. |
September 25, 2002 - Day 11. Morning.
The wall next to the other electrical box still needs some clean-up. |
September 25, 2002 - Day 11. Lunch Time.
As of lunch, the drywall appeared to be done inside the bathroom. He was working in the water heater room. Here you can see the electrical box on the left has been moved to its new location and the patching fixed near the electrical box on the right. |

Tuesday, October 8, 2002 - Day 21. Evening.
By the end of Tuesday, October 8, the shower fixtures were installed, however we discovered that the piece between the wall and the handles was missing. Actually Price Pfister doesn't make this sleeve in bushed nickel, but they are sending me a polished chrome piece for free. |
Tuesday, October 8, 2002 - Day 21. Evening.
Work was also completed on the sink. It now fully works-with minimal leaks. They are taking a couple of days off to let some plaster dry. They are suppose to show up on Saturday, Oct 12 to continue. This will give us a few days of rest! |

Part III - The leak fix |
Day 36. Tuesday, January 27, 2004.
Just over a year past since we thought we were done, but one little problem remained--the shower leaked! After three months of construction, we were not anxious to do any more work on the bathroom, besides, John was coming and with a new baby and a toddler we weren't ready for more construction projects. |
Day 36. Tuesday, January 27, 2004.
But in the right corner of the door, water would run out every time we took a shower. The problem, the tile was leaning out of the shower, not into the shower. So, time for Tri-Tech to remove the door and tiles and slope them in. |
Day 36. Tuesday, January 27, 2004.
They came out to "look", tried to convince us it was the seal on the door, but quickly discovered we were right about the slope of the tiles, so off went the old tiles. |
